Collegium recommends elevation of Delhi HC Chief Justice Manmohan as Supreme Court judge

The Supreme Court Collegium has recently recommended the appointment of the Delhi High Court Chief Justice Manmohan to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court collegium, comprising the Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, has recommended elevation of Delhi High Court (HC) Chief Justice, Manmohan, as a judge of Supreme Court (SC). The decision was taken at a meeting of the collegium, composed at that time, of all of its members.

Composition of the Collegium

Along with CJI Sanjiv Khanna, the collegium consists of Justices BR Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy, and AS Oka. Till date the number of judges (with CJI) is only 32 as against the sanctioned strength of 34. These positions became vacant due to the retirement of Justices Hima Kohli and DY Chandrachud.

Justice Manmohan (61 years)a senior now to the retired lawyer politician and chief of the former lawyer politician, late Jagmohan--the governor of Jammu and Kashmir and the Lt governor of Delhi is at an age suitable enough to make a considered suggestion on this exercise. Justice Manmohan (born in Delhi, 17 December 1962) pursued his schooling at Modern School, Delhi, and obtained a Bachelor of Arts (History) from Hindu College, Delhi University. He then got an LLB degree from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, 1987 and begin practicing law in the same year.

A Distinguished Legal Career

Justice Manmohan has experience in Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court civil, criminal, constitutional, tax, arbitration, trademarks, and services. He also held the position of a senior panel counsel for the Government of India and was conferred the status of a senior advocate by the Delhi High Court in 2003.

During its time in private practice, Justice Manmohan handled a number of notorious cases, including the case on the Dabhol Power Company, the case on the Hyderabad Nizam's Jewelleries Trust and the case on Claridges Hotel.

Judicial Appointments and Contributions

In March 2008, Justice Manmohan was given additional assignment as a Judge of the Delhi High court, which was later acknowledged as a permanent Judge in the next year. Since November 2023 he has been governing as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and as the office of the Chief Justice in September 2024.

His profound understanding and contribution to the legal profession lead to the assumption that the appointment of Justice Manmohan to the bench will lead the SC back on the path of judicial activism once more.
