The epicenter of the earthquake was reported to be located in northern Afghanistan around the 28.11.2024, where multiple tremors measuring up to 5.8 on the Richter scale were felt around 4:20 P.M local time. Tremors were also felt as far as India in the states of Jammu and Kashmir.
Underneath the surface
According to reports, the earthquake was said to have occurred 165 km below the earth’s surface, specifically in Afghanistan. This information was confirmed by the National Institute of Seismology through their Twitter account, which said “EQ of M: 5.8 which occurred on 28/11/2024 at 16:19 in Central Eastern Afghanistan.”
Limited repercussions within the Indian territory
According to several reports, there were no deaths or major injuries caused near the Kashmir Valley area as the trembles didn’t seem to cause a lot of chaos. Some residents reported seeing things shaking when the earthquake was felt but looked to be in comfort.
As reported, Pakistan suffered from a 5.2 magnitude earthquake which occurred in one of their provinces located northwest near the Afghan-Tajikistan border. This further confusion and disorientation was felt through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and other regions where no harm was caused as the quake was reported too deep.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are in the seismic region because of the continual thrusting of the Indian Plate against the Eurasian Plate. The area has experienced strong earthquakes and Pakistan saw one such earthquake in the past.
