Citizens have no right to know about source of electoral bond, Centre tells SC

The Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani told the Supreme Court on Sunday that citizens do not have a fundamental right to know the sources of electoral bonds funds on Sunday.

Attorney General R Venkataramani argued in a statement that citizens do not have a fundamental right to know the sources of funds donated through electoral bonds, in response to petitions challenging the electoral bonds scheme.

On Sunday, the AG argued that there can be no general right to know “anything and everything without being subjected to reasonable restrictions”, according to  Live Law report.

Electoral bonds are financial instruments that citizens or corporate groups can buy from a bank and give to a political party, which is then free to redeem them. The entire process is anonymous as no one needs to declare the purchase of these interest-free bonds and political parties do not need to show the source of the money.

The Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Center launched the scheme in January 2018.

The hearing of the matter will begin on Tuesday before the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.
