A newly constructed bridge over the Bakra River in Bihar’s Araria district, costing Rs 12 crore, collapsed on Tuesday before its inauguration. The bridge, intended to improve travel between Kursa Kanta and Sikty, was not yet open to the public as service roads were incomplete. Fortunately, there were no deaths reported.
The clip showed the bridge crumbling in seconds. Araria SP Amit Ranjan confirmed that officials are looking into the cause of the collapse. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari clarified that the project was overseen by the Bihar Government's Rural Development Ministry, not the Central Road Transport Ministry.
Sikti's RJD MLA, Vijay Kumar, blamed the construction company's negligence and demanded an investigation. "The bridge collapsed due to the negligence of the construction company's owner. We demand that the administration conduct an investigation," Kumar stated.
This incident comes after another bridge collapsed in Bihar's Bhagalpur last June, prompting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to order an investigation. Both incidents raise questions about infrastructure safety and accountability in the state.
