Bhopal New Market Fire: Encroachments Delay Emergency Response, ₹5 Crore Loss Estimated

A devastating fire broke out at the Balaji Chhole Bhature shop in Bhopal's bustling New Market on Thursday afternoon, rapidly spreading to 5-6 adjacent shops and completely gutting 10-12 handcarts. While the estimated financial loss for the traders stands at a staggering ₹4 to ₹5 crore, the incident has exposed a glaring civic failure.

Despite the nearest fire station being located just 1 kilometre away, emergency fire tenders took a crucial 25 to 30 minutes to navigate through the market and reach the scene. This significant delay was attributed to narrow access routes choked by rampant illegal encroachments and approximately 400 hawker carts blocking the way.

This alarming incident serves as a harsh reminder that unchecked street encroachments are not merely traffic nuisances but major safety hazards that severely jeopardise lives and properties during emergencies. For the VYGR news desk, highlighting such pressing civic lapses is vital for driving community awareness and demanding immediate administrative accountability.
