This year, 106 people have been awarded the Padma Award, one of the highest civilian awards in India. These awards are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.
The Padma Vibhushan was awarded to six people, including Mulayam Singh Yadav (Posthumous), Zakir Hussain, KM Birla, Dilip Mahalanabis (Posthumous), Srinivas Varadhan and Sudha Murthy.
Nine people were awarded the Padma Bhushan, and 91 people were awarded the Padma Shri. 19 of the awardees are women, while two are from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI and seven are Posthumous. President Droupadi Murmu approved the conferment of the awards on Wednesday, ahead of the 74th Republic Day.

The Padma Award are one of the highest civilian awards in the Republic of India. They are presented by the President of India in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The awards are given in various fields such as arts, literature, education, medicine, social work, science and engineering, trade and industry, sports, civil service, and public affairs. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day and are conferred by the President of India at a ceremonial function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, usually around March/April.
Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field. The awardees are selected by a committee appointed by the Prime Minister, and the selection is based on recommendations received from various state and union territory governments, as well as from private individuals and organizations.
