Why did thousands of students in Jharkhand take to the streets for weeks?

In 2024, the JSSC CGL 2023 exam was conducted for around 2,025 posts, with nearly 3 lakh candidates appearing. Soon after, allegations of paper leaks, cheating and advance access to questions surfaced.

Students staged a prolonged protest in Ranchi, demanding cancellation of the exam and a CBI inquiry. After around 24–26 days of protests, the government cancelled several recruitment exams, including JSSC CGL.

But then came another twist. Candidates who had already been selected challenged the cancellation in the High Court. On August 21, the Jharkhand High Court stayed the cancellation, leaving the future of the recruitment process uncertain.

Then, on September 7, the CID arrested Rajan Kumar, alleging that he took aspirants to a hotel in West Bengal and helped them memorise questions and answers. Eleven people have reportedly been arrested so far, including four successful candidates.

For many aspirants, this was more than an exam. It meant years of preparation, career decisions and hopes of securing a government job.

Now the questions remain: What happens to the candidates caught between the investigation and the court battle? And can faith in the recruitment system be restored?
