The Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), the first medical college in the northeastern state, was officially inaugurated by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on October 14 in Kohima, according to news agency PTI.
Mandaviya emphasised that the NIMSR is a medical college as well as a research institute.
"It will not only fulfill the purpose of imparting medical education but will also address the health issues of the Naga people," he added.
While emphasising the Center's dedication to enhancing medical education in India, Mandaviya said, "In a span of just nine years, the (number of) MBBS seats in India has increased from 64,000 to 1.6 lakh. Similarly, PG seats have also doubled in the last nine years."
He added that medical students shouldn't confine their research only within the border of the nation. He added that the Centre has started foreign language courses in many medical education institutions to give students an advantage in getting jobs abroad. "We must encash on opportunities abroad as well," he said.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) granted approval for the admission of 100 MBBS students beginning with the academic year 2023–2024 at NIMSR, Kohima, which is affiliated with Nagaland University, in April, according to a statement from the health ministry.
It stated that on September 1st, following their introduction process, 85 MBBS students from Nagaland and six from the all-India seats were admitted to the NIMSR and enrolled in MBBS classes.
It was a historic day for the people of Nagaland, according to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, as a long-cherished ambition of theirs was achieved. The chief minister congratulated the Union government for firmly pursuing the project, saying that having a medical college in their state was a long-cherished goal of the Naga people.
Rio added that the NIMSR would one day become a centre of excellence and that it would help the state improve its secondary and tertiary healthcare.
