Risking Lives for Education: Viral Video Exposes Dangerous School Commute in Vidisha

A chilling video from Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha district has gone viral, showcasing school children risking their lives to cross the fast-flowing Betwa River. To reach their high school in Paloh village, students residing in the nearby Kakrua village are forced to jump between the concrete pillars of a stop dam over the swollen river.

Key Highlights of the Incident:

• The Dangerous Shortcut: The students undertake this perilous journey to avoid taking an 8 to 10-kilometer detour via the designated road route. Crossing the stop dam reduces their commute to just around 1.5 kilometers.

• Monsoon Perils: During the monsoon season, the Betwa River overflows, making the slippery, four-foot jumps between the dam's pillars extremely treacherous. A single slip or loss of balance could easily result in students being swept away by the strong currents.

• Immediate Action Taken: After the video sparked outrage on social media, the local administration quickly swung into action. Vidisha Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kshitij Sharma immediately inspected the site.

• Safety Measures Implemented: Authorities have blocked access to the stop dam using thorny bushes and deployed a guard to prevent children from attempting the crossing.

• Future Solutions: To ease the students' commute, the administration has provided bicycles for them to take the longer, safer route. Furthermore, a proposal is being prepared to upgrade a nearby middle school in Bandhera to a high school so students won't have to travel as far. A temporary bridge is also being considered.
