Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen's daughter, Nandana Dev Sen, swiftly dispelled rumours of her father's demise. An erroneous Twitter account attributed to American economist Claudia Goldin had incorrectly announced Sen's passing at the age of 89.
Nandana Sen promptly reassured everyone that her father was alive and well, sharing a heartwarming photo of the two of them together. She revealed that they had recently spent quality time as a family in Cambridge, with her father actively engaged in teaching and his ongoing work on a gender-focused book.
The Twitter account responsible for the false announcement later admitted to being a hoax, the creation of Italian journalist Tommaso Debenedetti.
Amartya Sen, born in 1933 in Shantiniketan, West Bengal, has made profound contributions to economics, social choice theory, welfare economics, and development economics. Notably, he became the first Indian economist to receive the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1998, recognizing his groundbreaking work on welfare economics, poverty, and inequality.
A tweeted image from The Nobel Prize showcased Sen riding a bicycle, highlighting its role in his research. Sen's education included studies at prestigious institutions like Presidency College, Kolkata, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned his PhD in economics. An accomplished author, he continues to serve as a professor at Harvard University, with acclaimed works like "Development as Freedom" (1999), "The Idea of Justice" (2009), and "The Argumentative Indian" (2005) to his name.
