Inside SECMOL Ladakh: The Real '3 Idiots' School Built by Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk

The Real Phunsukh Wangdu’s School: How SECMOL is Revolutionizing Education in Ladakh

Anyone who watched the iconic Bollywood blockbuster 3 Idiots remembers the breathtaking climax featuring "Rancho’s School," run by Phunsukh Wangdu. But this innovative institution is not just fiction—it is a real, functional school located near Phey village in Ladakh. Officially known as the SECMOL Campus (Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh), it was founded by renowned Ladakhi engineer, education reformer, and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk.

Key Highlights of the SECMOL Model:

  • Practical & Self-Reliant Learning: Developed as a campus between 1994 and 1999 for youth primarily aged 16 to 20, SECMOL moves away from conventional rote learning. Instead, the curriculum emphasizes hands-on practical knowledge, solar technology, organic farming, engineering, and self-reliance.

  • Zero-Energy Solar Architecture: One of the most fascinating aspects of the SECMOL campus is its eco-friendly, climate-responsive design. Built using traditional rammed earth and clever solar positioning, the buildings remain warm and comfortable inside even during Ladakh's freezing sub-zero winter months, while staying naturally cool in the summer.

  • Minimal Electricity Consumption: By harnessing solar energy and natural architectural techniques, the campus operates with minimal external power consumption, making it a pioneer in sustainable living.

  • A Home Away From Home: Because the campus is collaboratively managed by the students themselves in harmony with nature, the atmosphere feels much more like a welcoming home than a rigid hostel.

Today, as Sonam Wangchuk continues his vocal advocacy and climate protests to safeguard the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, his vision at SECMOL stands as a beacon of what future-ready, sustainable education should look like.
