Weeks after Bharti Airtel launched India's first home wireless Wi-Fi service, Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries also made a similar announcement at its 46th annual general meeting. Reliance Jio's state-of-the-art 5G-based fixed wireless access (FWA) internet service, known as Jio AirFiber, is scheduled to be launched in the country on September 19. This breakthrough service was first introduced at his Reliance Industries Annual General Meeting 2022. Jio AirFiber is said to offer internet speeds of over 1Gbps, comparable to the speeds of traditional fibre broadband services, including Reliance's Jio Fiber, without the need for optical cables.
Reliance Jio's 5G-based fixed wireless access (FWA) internet service provides internet over Wi-Fi using plug-and-play Wi-Fi routers. Unlike traditional broadband services like Jio Fiber which rely on fiber optic cables, Jio AirFiber connects directly to Jio towers via a wireless router receiver. Built-in Wi-Fi function, transmits internet service wirelessly. This basically means that your router will receive your internet-enabled 5G network signal without the need for fibre optic cables and it will be distributed wirelessly to your connected devices.
Jio Fiber Vs Jio AirFiber:
Unlike the Jio Fiber network, AirFiber is not limited to the infrastructure of an optical cable network and can provide greater coverage. AirFiber networks are easy to set up because they use plug-in routers. Jio has confirmed that its AirFiber routers are Wi-Fi 6 standard compliant and come with a built-in security firewall.
Competitive product by Jio AirFiber:
Airtel already offers its AirFiber service in some cities and uses similar plug-and-play devices for installation. Airtel's 5G-based FWA is based on the Wi-Fi 6 standard, which is known for high speeds, wider coverage, and lower latency compared to Wi-Fi 5. Airtel AirFiber offers internet speeds of up to 100 Mbps, while Jio has promised that his FWA service will cross the 1 Gbps threshold. During the 2023 general meeting, Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani announced that AirFiber will serve as the foundation for Jio smart home solutions.
Ambani told the shareholder's meeting that the company's extensive fibre-optic network connects more than 200 million locations. Jio AirFiber devices are aimed at providing last-mile connectivity in many parts of India. Ambani envisions expanding the telco's connectivity facilities to 150,000 connections per day with Jio AirFiber. This is ten times the number of connections he could achieve with fibre alone.
Jio AirFiber Expected Price:
Jio AirFiber is expected to be expensive compared to traditional fibre-based JioFiber. However, by offering AirFiber services starting at Rs 4,435 for a six-month subscription, it has the potential to overwhelm its direct competitor Airtel.
With this 'new credibility', Ambani demonstrates the credibility of digital to act as a one-stop shop for his services. The launch of Jio AirFiber is part of Reliance's strategy to improve access to all its products and services, including JioCinema, JioSaavn, Reliance Retail, etc., and create an ecosystem that becomes an all-inclusive destination for consumers.
