Sonam Wangchuk Shifted to Hospital on Day 21 of Hunger Strike; CJP Founder Abhijeet Dipke Begins Indefinite Fast

Midnight Drama at Jantar Mantar: Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalized Amid Police Action

The peaceful demonstration at Delhi's Jantar Mantar took a dramatic turn after climate activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital by the Delhi Police as his indefinite hunger strike entered its 21st day.

Key Highlights of the Ground Situation:

  • Police vs. Supporter Claims: According to Delhi Police, Wangchuk was transferred for essential emergency medical care in compliance with Delhi High Court directions following severe deterioration in his health. However, his supporters allege that he was dragged away against his will.

  • Protest Site Evacuated: Following his hospitalization, police cleared the Jantar Mantar protest site, forcefully dispersing students and supporters who had gathered to demand systemic educational reforms and institutional accountability.

  • Abhijeet Dipke Joins the Fast: In response to the police crackdown and the evacuation of the site, Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the youth-led movement Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has launched his own indefinite hunger strike in solidarity.

  • Health Update: Hospital medical bulletins indicate that while Wangchuk has lost significant weight (over 9 kg) and entered a critical stage of prolonged fasting, he remains conscious and under intensive medical observation in the emergency ward.

The incident has sparked widespread public debate over the freedom of peaceful protest and institutional sensitivity toward citizen-led movements.
