Some people have this habit of observing different kinds of vehicles while traveling. Many of us do see different vehicles when we get stuck in traffic and have nothing to do. You must have seen various coloured number plates like green, white, yellow, blue etc. on different vehicles. But do you know what each colour number plate means? Why is there a need to issue different colored number plates?

Number plates for any vehicle are issued by the Regional Transport Office, RTO. To make it easy to identify different-purpose vehicles and because of that, to make traffic police duty easy, we have this system of different colored number plates.
1) White number plate -
The most common number plates we have seen everywhere. This indicates that the vehicle belongs to an ordinary citizen and for private purposes. You can use these vehicles only for personal use and not for commercial purposes.
2) Yellow number plate -
Yellow number plate vehicles are used for commercial purposes. Vehicles like trucks, taxis, buses which are mainly used for commercial purposes have yellow number plates. Within the yellow number plate, it is compulsory to have a commercial driving licence and permit.
3) Green number plate -
Nowadays, electric vehicles are trending. Its demand is increasing and thus, almost each month, a different company announces the launch of its new EV. Yes, you are thinking in the correct way. Green number plates are used for electric vehicles. By switching to electric vehicles, we help to emit less carbon. This green number plate is meant for vehicles which emit less carbon.
4) Black number plate with yellow texts -
Do you remember about the zoomcars? The self-drive service on rent. These types of vehicles which are available on rent for self-drive have a black number plate with yellow text. Though these vehicles are used for commercial purposes, they don't need a commercial licence.
5) Red number plate with white texts -
When we buy any new vehicle, we have to register it at RTO for a number plate. This process takes time. And thus, until our registration becomes permanent, RTO gives us a number plate for temporary registration which is in red background and white texts. These red number plates are valid for upto a month.
6) Blue number plate -
There are special vehicles reserved for foreign diplomats from various countries. Whenever they visit India, they travel in those vehicles which have these blue number plates. Blue number plates come with a country code. For example, China's country code is 17 and the US's country code is 77.
7) Red number plate with state emblem
The Golden State Emblem of India with red background number plate. These cars belong to the President of India and governors of states.
