Twitter's Founder and ex-CEO Jack Dorsey has finally spoken! As people at Twitter and even the industry watchers have gone from concerned to angry with every passing day, Dorsey has put out a few words on the microblogging platform that he founded to voice out his apology to those who believed in him and are perhaps suffering today.
Jack tweeted, "Folks at Twitter past and present are strong and resilient. They will always find a way no matter how difficult the moment is. I realize many are angry with me. I own the responsibility for why everyone is in this situation: I grew the company size too quickly. I apologize for that."
"I am grateful for, and love, everyone who has ever worked on Twitter. I don't expect that to be mutual at this moment...or ever…and I understand," he added.
Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter has launched a slew of measures to quickly bring Twitter to order - slashing jobs and doubling working hours forcing many to voice out their discomfort at the sudden changes. In the earlier part of the week, some Twitter employees were also seen sleeping on the Twitter office floor in sleeping bags - simply to catch a quick nap between their tough-to-meet deadlines. And this weekend over half of the company's staff has been let go, building apprehension, pressure and mistrust even amongst those who have been retained.
The tweets stating, “When your team is pushing round the clock to make deadlines sometimes you #SleepWhereYouWork” were going viral all over the internet with social commentators demanding an explanation from the new boss for the need for such drastic measures. Many people thought this was concerning, many even commented saying that this isn't normal and that Twitter is understaffed.
Many tweets were targeted at Elon Musk as well throughout last week stating that Musk was creating a toxic workplace environment and the employees should have a work-life balance. It is famously known that Musk slept at Tesla's office back in 2018 to save time but the same model being replicated to employees may not be a justifiable thing to do.
While other people found this impressive and quite normal, many commented saying how they themselves pulled all-nighters at work all the time. One person said that working overtime is quite normal at senior positions as they have quite a big responsibility to lead their teams and that many people are offended by it as it is not something that is shown a lot. But it happens very often. Some managers to keep their own as well the team's morale high by quoting, “We are #OneTeam and we use the hashtag #LoveWhereYouWork to show it, which is why I retweeted with #SleepWhereYouWork -- a cheeky nod to fellow Tweeps. We've been in the midst of a crazy public acquisition for months but we keep going & I'm so proud of our strength & resilience.”
Whether people believe her or not one thing is certain, to run a platform like Twitter smoothly you require a dedicated army. And by the looks of it, Musk has his army ready.
Meanwhile, for Dorsey, a new platform called Bluesky seems to be under build that could handle the decentralized angles that Twitter was unable to service, thanks to its popularity amongst institutions and governments as well for quick announcements and faster outreach of information. The app is currently not ready and is in private beta testing. How many would trust Dorset with their careers again is a question that will be answered in time.
