In a glaring mockery of Bihar's strict prohibition laws, absolute chaos erupted on National Highway 28 in Samastipur after a car fully loaded with illegal liquor lost control and overturned into a deep roadside ditch. The incident took place near Pagda Chowk in the Dalsinghsarai police station area amid heavy rain, which caused the speeding vehicle to skid off the road. Immediately following the crash, the driver and occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.
As soon as local residents caught a whiff of the alcohol and realized what was inside the car, a massive crowd quickly gathered. Undeterred by the slippery, muddy conditions, around 25 to 30 people descended into the ditch and began frantically looting the tetra packs and bottles of liquor. Viral footage of the bizarre incident shows locals hauling away as much alcohol as they could carry, with some even using their gamchas (traditional towels) to bundle the stolen bottles. By the time the Dalsinghsarai police arrived at the location, the car had been completely emptied.
Authorities have since pulled the wrecked vehicle from the ditch using a crane and are investigating its registration details to trace the smuggling network. Furthermore, police are analyzing the viral videos to identify the looters and have issued a stern warning: residents must voluntarily return the looted liquor or face strict legal action during subsequent raids.
Interestingly, this is not an isolated event in the dry state. Similar chaotic scenes of public liquor looting have previously been reported following accidents involving smuggling vehicles in Gopalganj and Khagaria.
