Ahmedabad: What initially appeared to be a fatal hit-and-run on the outskirts of Ahmedabad has turned into an alleged honour-killing case, with police accusing a 56-year-old father and his 38-year-old son of murdering the younger member of their family and then staging the crime as a road accident.

The victim, identified as 22-year-old Sofia Farooq, was reportedly working as a hospital receptionist in Ahmedabad. Her death on August 13 had initially been treated as the result of a motorcycle accident. However, inconsistencies in the accident narrative, along with the discovery of a video showing Sofia with a young man, eventually led investigators to suspect that the crash had been deliberately staged.

Police have since arrested Sofia’s father, Mohammed Farooq Nawabkhan, 56, and her brother, Mohammed Habil Farooq, 38. The two have been booked in connection with the alleged murder.

What happened on the night of August 12?

According to the police investigation, Sofia was travelling on a motorcycle with her brother on the night of August 12 when the incident took a deadly turn.

The family initially claimed that an unidentified vehicle had rammed their motorcycle from behind near the Chelajpura/Gheljipura area. Sofia sustained severe injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. She was later shifted to Sola Civil Hospital, where she died at around 5 am on August 13.

Her brother, meanwhile, reportedly claimed that he too had suffered injuries in the supposed collision.

The case was consequently treated as a hit-and-run investigation. But as officers examined the circumstances surrounding the alleged crash, the accident theory began to fall apart.

Investigators reportedly found inconsistencies between the injuries, the alleged accident location and the account provided by Habil. CCTV footage also raised questions because investigators did not find evidence of another vehicle being involved at the location where the crash was said to have occurred.

The absence of corroborating evidence prompted police to look more closely at the family members' version of events.

Viral video became a key part of the investigation

During the probe, investigators reportedly learnt that a video featuring Sofia and a young man had gone viral roughly three months before her death.

Police allege that the video became a source of conflict within the family. Sofia's father and brother were reportedly upset about the video and objected to her interactions with other men. Investigators suspect that concerns about social reputation and what the family viewed as its “honour” eventually became the alleged motive behind the murder.

According to the investigation, the father and son had allegedly been planning Sofia's killing for some time rather than acting spontaneously on the night of the incident.

One account of the investigation states that the two allegedly selected a route Sofia regularly travelled while going to work because it was relatively dark and had fewer CCTV cameras. Police also suspect that the timing of the alleged attack was chosen carefully, with rain reportedly providing additional cover.

The allegations suggest that the purported road accident was not an impulsive cover-up but part of a broader plan to conceal the killing.

Police allege hammer was carried to the spot

Investigators have alleged that Habil carried an iron hammer with him while travelling with Sofia and their father.

Police said the motorcycle was diverted towards an isolated stretch near Gheljipura village. It was there, investigators allege, that Habil attacked Sofia with the hammer while their father assisted him.

The investigation further alleges that after Sofia became unconscious, she was taken back towards the main road. The accused allegedly attempted to make the scene resemble a traffic accident by damaging the motorcycle and causing injuries to Habil himself.

Sofia was then allegedly positioned near the roadside, creating the impression that she and her brother had been involved in a collision with an unidentified vehicle.

The alleged staging was apparently intended to divert police attention away from the family and towards a non-existent hit-and-run driver.

Why did police suspect the accident story?

The turning point in the case appears to have been the growing mismatch between the alleged accident and the evidence available at the scene.

If a speeding vehicle had struck the motorcycle from behind with enough force to cause Sofia's fatal injuries, investigators would ordinarily expect some supporting evidence—such as traces of the collision, CCTV footage, vehicle debris or witnesses.

Instead, police reportedly found that the location did not support the account provided by the family. CCTV footage also failed to show another vehicle corresponding to the alleged hit-and-run.

Habil's account consequently came under greater scrutiny. During questioning, police allege, investigators uncovered the family's connection to the killing.

The traffic accident investigation was subsequently transformed into a murder investigation, and the father and son were arrested.

Sofia was a working woman

The case has also drawn attention because Sofia was not a minor or an unknown figure in the family. Police said she worked as a receptionist at a hospital in Ahmedabad's Juhapura/Bopal area.

Her father and brother, meanwhile, were reportedly involved in a fabrication business.

The investigation has therefore raised disturbing questions about the circumstances under which an adult woman's personal relationships could become the alleged justification for violence within her own family.

Police have described the suspected motive as being linked to “family honour” following the circulation of the video.

The allegations also underscore a troubling pattern associated with so-called honour crimes: personal choices involving relationships or friendships can become the basis for family members attempting to exercise control through intimidation, violence or, in the most extreme cases, murder.

A month-long mystery ends in murder case

Sofia's death occurred on August 12-13, but the alleged murder conspiracy only came to light weeks later.

For nearly a month, the incident remained under the shadow of the original hit-and-run theory. Investigators continued examining the circumstances before determining that the road accident narrative was allegedly fabricated.

The case was subsequently transferred from the initial traffic investigation into a criminal probe focused on murder.

Police have now arrested both accused family members and registered a murder case against them. Investigators are continuing to examine the alleged planning, the circumstances surrounding the viral video, the weapon used and the sequence of events leading to Sofia's death.

The disturbing question behind the case

The Ahmedabad case goes beyond the question of whether a hit-and-run occurred. At its centre is the allegation that a young woman was killed by people from her own family because they feared embarrassment or damage to their social standing.

The irony is stark: the alleged perpetrators reportedly went to considerable lengths to protect the family's reputation, but the very attempt to conceal the crime ultimately brought the alleged murder to light.

What began as a report of an unidentified vehicle fleeing an accident has instead emerged as a case in which investigators allege that the supposed accident itself was part of the crime.

Sofia's death now forms the centre of a murder investigation, while the father and son remain in police custody and face serious criminal charges. The allegations will ultimately be tested through the legal process and evidence presented before the court.

For now, the investigation has exposed how a viral video, family objections and concerns over social reputation allegedly escalated into a fatal conspiracy—and how an elaborate attempt to disguise the killing as a road accident failed to withstand police scrutiny.
