Meta-owned WhatsApp which is one of the world's most used messaging apps, has also been accused of its contribution to spreading misinformation. The company have initiated efforts in combating fake content and AI-generated fake images. To deal with the problem, WhatsApp is said to be testing a new feature that will enable users to verify images directly in the app without leaving the platform.
The feature for 'Search on web' has been released in the new version of Android beta of WhatsApp at 2.24.23.13. Users can enable reverse image search using Google Lens and take a closer look at whether it is real or not. Users will just need to tap the picture they would like to verify, then tap the three-dot menu at the corner to the right and select search on the internet option. This update puts an end to opening another browser, then navigating to Google Lens and uploading the image manually.
WhatsApp Unveils New Verification and Contact Features
Currently this reverse image search is available to some beta testers only but WhatsApp will roll it out for more users in subsequent weeks. This streamlined option also helps the users verify images that come their way and reduces the scope of fake news spreading on the platform. WhatsApp recently released other features, like custom lists to organize the contacts and the new Status mention option, which is pretty much similar to Instagram Stories. Here, users can tag people in their Status and they can easily connect with them.
