In the men's 3000m steeplechase in the Diamond League competition in Xiamen, China, on Saturday, Avinash Sable came in sixth. The Commonwealth Games silver medalist qualified for the series finals, which will be placed in Eugene on September 16–17 as a result of the outcome.
At the World Championships in Budapest last week, 28-year-old Sable didn't advance past the preliminary rounds, but she did considerably better this time. The Indian finished in fourth place, five seconds behind Commonwealth Games gold medalist Abraham Kibiwot of Kenya (8:15.87s), who set a new national record.
Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco, the current world and Olympic champion, won the event in a time that set a new meeting record of 8:10.31s. Samuel Firewu of Ethiopia finished in second place with a time of 8:11.29s, and Amos Serem of Kenya came in third with 8:14.41s.
Sable finished in fifth position, earning four points, bringing his total after six meets in which the men's 3000m steeplechase event was held to 11. Sable placed sixth overall and qualified for the Diamond League final, where the top 10 are expected to battle.
On the lineup of Indian athletes who have been selected for the Diamond League Final this year, Sable is joined by reigning world, Olympic, and Diamond League champion in the javelin throw Neeraj Chopra, and silver medalist in the long jump at the Commonwealth Games M. Sreeshankar.
In the men's triple jump competition, Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker came in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Praveen, who earlier this year set the nation's record of 17.37m, could only muster a best effort of 16.42m, while Abdulla, a Commonwealth Games silver medalist, came in second with 16.25m.
Andy Diaz Hernandez, who recently switched from being a Cuban to an Italian, won the competition with a leap of 17.43 meters. Burkinabe world champion Hugues Fabrice Zango came in second with 17.22m, and American Donald Scott came in third with 16.65m.
