Just weeks before the franchises finalise their squads for the next Indian Premier League season, the biggest story in cricket’s transfer market is one that few saw coming. Punjab Kings are reportedly closing in on a trade to bring Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya to Mohali, with India left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh and wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Vinod expected to go the other way.
Not yet confirmed: The deal is based on media reports, and neither franchise nor the IPL has officially confirmed it. No comment from either side was available at the time of writing.
What Is Being Reported?
According to reports, Punjab Kings are in advanced discussions with Mumbai Indians over a swap that would send Hardik to Punjab. In return, Mumbai would receive Arshdeep, who has been the cornerstone of Punjab’s bowling attack, along with Vishnu Vinod. The paperwork is expected to be processed by IPL officials before the retention deadline on November 17, and an official announcement could follow later this week.
The talks are said to have gained momentum after a senior Mumbai Indians official made the first approach. Mumbai is also reported to have explored trade possibilities for Hardik with at least three other franchises before the conversation with Punjab took shape.
Why Would Mumbai Indians Let Hardik Go?
Reports suggest that Mumbai were not looking to retain Hardik after three below-par seasons in his second stint with the club. He returned to Mumbai from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash trade before IPL 2024, following two seasons in Gujarat that included a title as captain in 2022. That homecoming, however, turned out to be difficult. Mumbai finished at the bottom of the table in 2024, the season in which Hardik took over the captaincy from Rohit Sharma, and the period was marked by heavy scrutiny.
Mumbai retained him for ₹16.35 crore ahead of IPL 2026, but his returns that season were modest, with 206 runs and four wickets. His overall IPL record remains strong: across 162 matches he has scored 2,955 runs at a strike rate of about 146 and taken 82 wickets, and he has won five titles.
Why Would Punjab Kings Want Him?
For Punjab, led by Shreyas Iyer, the appeal is the combination of a proven match-winner and a genuine all-rounder who can contribute with bat and ball. Reports say the franchise was prepared to add such a player even at the cost of Arshdeep. A report notes that Hardik’s arrival could push overseas all-rounder Marcus Stoinis to the bench.
What Would Punjab Lose?
Arshdeep, 27, has been the pillar of Punjab’s attack. He is the franchise’s highest wicket-taker in the IPL and became the first Punjab bowler to reach 100 IPL wickets this April, with figures of 3 for 22 against Mumbai at the Wankhede. Punjab retained him at ₹18 crore at the 2025 auction by using the Right to Match card, which made him one of the costliest pace bowlers in the league.
His departure would leave a gap in Punjab’s new-ball attack, and reports suggest the franchise could look at a second trade to restore the balance, with Lucknow Super Giants pacer Mohsin Khan mentioned as a possible target.
What Would Mumbai Gain?
If the reports are correct, Mumbai would trade an all-rounder whose recent returns have been below expectations for a frontline India pacer. Arshdeep’s left-arm angle and death-over skills would add variety to an attack built around Jasprit Bumrah, while Vishnu Vinod would provide wicketkeeping and batting depth.
How Do IPL Trades Work?
Trades between franchises take place during the window between seasons and need the agreement of both teams and the player, with the league’s approval. Teams may swap players or make cash deals, and salaries are typically carried over. The window comes before the retention deadline, which this year falls on November 17, after which teams submit their retained lists. The player auction for IPL 2027 is scheduled for December 16 in Goa.
What Could Happen Next?
- Other moves. Hardik’s reported exit could trigger further activity around Mumbai’s squad. Reports have speculated about whether other franchises might pursue Mumbai players, including Suryakumar Yadav, but none of that has been confirmed.
- Captaincy. Questions about who would lead Mumbai if Hardik leaves are likely to follow once the deal is official.
- Punjab’s balance. The team may need to restructure its bowling and overseas options.
What Do Fans and Analysts Make of It?
Reaction will depend on the details. Supporters of the move see a chance for Hardik to reset in a new setting after a turbulent stretch, while Mumbai fans may be reluctant to see him go after an expensive homecoming. For Punjab, the question is whether swapping a premier bowler for an all-rounder strengthens a side that has been building steadily under Iyer.
For now, the cricketing world will wait for the official word. If the reports hold, the deal would be among the most significant trades in the league’s history, and it would reshape two squads before the auction.
