Inter Miami was involved in a 2-2 draw with Atlanta United in action over the weekend, but perhaps where it gained most of its attention was in the news that came as Lionel Messi found himself benched from a crucial match. Assistant coach Javier Morales breaks down why.
Why Messi Did Not Start
The pitch had been devoid of Messi's brilliant skills for three months: one was because of international duty while the other was due to an ankle injury in the final match of the 2024 Copa America. The rehabilitation was closed in his sight so that chance was not left behind by the coaching staff in terms of his fitness.

Messi Returns
Messi played for Miami in a recent 3-1 win over Philadelphia Union, scoring twice and earning an assist. However, he didn't start against Atlanta. Gressel made way for Messi in the 61st minute while the fans went wild since he sat out last year's game against Atlanta.
Morales on Messi's Impact
Messi always looks sharp, and tonight was no different
," Morales said in the wake of the match. "He played almost 30 minutes and created scoring chances. As always, he was a productive player."
Tactical Reason for Resting Messi
Morales revealed that coach Tata Martino decided to play out the rest period for Messi together with Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba, as there were crowded engagements and suspension cases. We have three games this week so the coaching staff felt that this lineup is a good one to play against Atlanta. We almost got all three points so I think it was a good call,

What's In Store for Inter Miami?
Miami lost twice through David Ruiz and Leonardo Campana but took just a draw from the pocket as they left the stadium. The team remains in an excellent position while continuing with the chase for the Supporters' Shield and the MLS Cup this year 2024.
