What is an Impact Player in the IPL?

The new season of the IPL brings with it a major new rule that could significantly impact the tournament's outcomes as well. After experimenting with the "Impact Player" rule in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament in October, the BCCI implemented it in IPL 2023. It implies that each group on a given day can play 12 players.   The game Cricket usually has 11 players on each team, but an extra player can play as an "Impact Player" on the field.

Since the Australia-based Big Bash League has already implemented this rule, this is the first time it will be used in IPL. Each franchise can add an "Impact Player" to its batting or bowling team following the rule. While submitting the team sheets, each skipper will be permitted to appoint four substitute players from whom they may be summoned to the field later. One can do everything as an impact player, including batting, bowling, and fielding. Notwithstanding, just the Indian player can be the impact player except if the franchise has lesser than four foreign players in the Playing XI. Before the start of the innings or at the end of an over, an impact player can be added to the game. When a wicket falls or a batter wishes to retire at any point during an over, an impact player can step onto the field if the team is batting.
