West Ham United beat Manchester United after 18 years at Old Trafford. The last time West Ham defeated Manchester United, a certain Carlos Tevez used to play for West Ham, and he was the one who scored 18 years back, which saved West Ham from relegation. Hammers also ensured a league double over United for the first time since 2006-07. Manchester United produced yet another humiliating performance in the Premier League as they were defeated 2-0 at their ground. West Ham pulled a solid and attacking performance and registered their first win after 8 matches. Whereas Man United haven’t won in the Premier League in their last 7 matches.
Soucek and Bowen scores for West Ham
The match started with some attacking moves from both sides, but it was Tomas Soucek who gave the Hammers a lead after he received a beautiful pass from Mohammed Kudus, which he dispatched to the back of the net from between the legs of Amass. After the first half, the Hammers were leading 1-0. At the beginning of the second half, the United boys showed some attacking football, but in the 57th minute against the run of play, the Hammers pulled off a perfect counter-attack, which was dispatched by Jarrod Bowen to the back of the net. Bowen has now recorded 11 goals and 7 assists this season and has been the main player for the Hammers this season.
Another horrible performance by United
Manchester United’s struggling season in the Premier League continues as they are now 16th in the Premier League table, their worst performance in many years. The United boys had their chances against the Hammers, but they failed to capitalize on them in front of the goal due to some bad finishing and good goalkeeping. Manchester United had an xG of 2.28 in this match, whereas the Graham Potter side had an xG of 1.56, but the Hammers were more clinical in front of the goal. Rasmus Hojlund missed a lot of chances in front of the goal, but he was a bit unlucky at times, too, as Areola pulled off some unexpected saves.
What's next for United?
Manchester United, who have reached the finals of the Europa League, would be looking to get some wins in the Premier League too, because currently it looks like there are two different Manchester United teams, one that is dominating Europe and one that looks clueless in the Premier League. They would now be shifting their focus to Chelsea, whom they will be facing in the Premier League before facing Spurs in the Europa League final. After the match, Amorim made some comments on the current situation:
"We are losing the feeling that we are a massive club, and it's the end of the world to lose a game at home.
"If we are not scared of losing a game as Manchester United and don't have that fear anymore, it is the most dangerous thing a big club can have."
Ruben has to work hard with his players if Manchester United wants its “Glory days” back.
