Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya's disappointing defeats
Star wrestlers from India, Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya, unexpectedly lost in the selection trials and were not allowed to advance to the Paris Olympics qualification phase. Though Bajrang and Ravi had won bronze and silver medals, respectively, at the Tokyo Olympics in the past, they failed in the trials. In the semifinal of the 65 kg men's freestyle, Bajrang lost badly, and Dahiya found it difficult to contribute following his return from injury.
The Selection Trials' Implications
Due to their losses, Bajrang and Ravi will not be able to participate in the qualifying round for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. In contrast, the trial winners will have the opportunity to compete for India in the Asian and World Olympic Qualifiers, which will guarantee fierce competition and high-stakes games.
Paris 2024 Olympics Roadmap
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) provided a comprehensive procedure for selecting the country's Olympic representatives in Paris. A direct entry to the 2024 Asian Championships will be granted to wrestler Antim Panghal, who has already obtained a quota for the competition. To choose the last challenger who will take on the quota winner for the coveted slot at the Paris Olympics, elite wrestlers from a variety of weight classes will compete in a Nordic format on May 31.
