Sri Lanka started its conquer on the Asia Cup 2023 journey with a thumping victory over Bangladesh with a 5-wicket win. This is the 11th consecutive ODI win for Sri Lanka as they chased 165 down with the Asian neighbours to start their 2023 Asia Cup journey in Pallekele on August 30th.
Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat first, led by Shakib Al Hasan as he won the toss and decided to bat first. This wasn’t a great decision as the side lost its first 3 wickets within the first 36 runs - Maheesh Theekshana gave a tough time to the side starting off on his spiel with his second ball itself. Matheesha Pathirana’s bowling at 4 for 32 restricted Bangladesh to 164 setting a target of 165 for his side.
During Sri Lanka’s chase, quick fifties from Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Asalanka gave a comfortable stance to an already confident Sri Lankan side. Samarawickrama’s 54 off 77 balls and Asalanka’s unbeaten 62 off 92 balls brought Sri Lanka the first victory it has tasted this Asia Cup season. Sri Lanka despite not having Wanindu Hasaranga, Chameera, Madushanka, and Kumara on their side did well throughout both innings.
They will be playing against Afghanistan on Tuesday, the 5th of September at the Gaddafi Stadium.
