Yuzvendra Chahal, the senior spinner who was overlooked for the 2023 ICC World Cup, has made a comeback to the Indian white-ball setup for their upcoming tour of South Africa. This tour comes after India's impressive performance as runners-up in the World Cup. Three ODIs against the Proteas will follow a T20I series on the tour.
Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar expressed surprise at Chahal's inclusion in the ODI squad, considering his previous success in the shortest format of the game. Manjrekar also mentioned the importance of workload management and expressed excitement for the return of pacer Deepak Chahar, who has recovered from a long injury layoff.
Manjrekar praised the inclusion of pacer Mukesh Kumar, describing him as a sturdy and dependable bowler. However, he still found Chahal's inclusion in the ODI squad unexpected, as he believed Chahal was better suited for T20 cricket. Manjrekar noted that India has other spin options like Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav for the ODIs.
For the T20I series, India has selected a squad consisting of young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Suryakumar Yadav, along with experienced players like Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. The ODI squad includes players such as KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Axar Patel, among others.
Overall, the inclusion of Chahal in the ODI squad has raised eyebrows, but the Indian team management seems to have a plan in place for their spin department. With a mix of experienced and young players, India will be looking to continue their good form against South Africa in both the T20I and ODI series.
