In Euro 2024 qualifying, Bruno Fernandes played a pivotal role in Portugal's fifth consecutive victory as his goal secured a 1-0 win against Slovakia in Bratislava on Friday. Notably, Roberto Martinez's team, competing in Group J, has maintained a clean sheet by not allowing any goals, while they have netted 15 goals themselves. They currently hold a five-point lead over their closest competitor, who experienced their first defeat in the competition.
In the absence of the veteran defender Pepe, who is 40 years old and sidelined due to injury, the Portugal coach opted for the 19-year-old Benfica defender Antonio Silva to partner with Ruben Dias in the central defence. Cristiano Ronaldo, who, at the age of 38, was making his 201st appearance for Portugal, had previously scored against Slovakia in 2005 during a World Cup qualifier, adding to his remarkable career total of 850 goals. However, he couldn't increase his goal tally in this particular match.The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward made his Portugal debut in 2003 and holds the record for the most international goals, with 123, and the most international appearances of any player.
After Fernandes took a shot instead of passing following a defensive mix-up by Slovakia, Ronaldo raised his arms in frustration, and Martin Dubravka managed to save the midfielder's low effort. In a cautious first half marked by limited opportunities, Slovakia maintained a tight defence. However, the hosts had a chance to take the lead when Lukas Haraslin narrowly missed the near post with a powerful shot. Shortly afterwards, Fernandes put Portugal in the lead by skillfully slotting the ball into the far corner from a challenging angle. This goal was his third of the qualifying campaign and gave the visitors the lead going into halftime.
