India has announced veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin as a replacement for injured spin bowling all-rounder Axar Patel in their 15-member squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup. Axar Patel sustained a quadriceps tear and is not expected to recover in time for the tournament. Ajit Agarkar served as the selection committee's chairman, and they decided to include Ashwin, who is 37, in the team.
Ashwin had performed well in the recently concluded series against Australia, taking four wickets in two ODIs. The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the replacement in a media release, stating that Axar Patel had failed to recover from his injury sustained during the Asia Cup Super Four encounter against Bangladesh. Ashwin, who was impressive in his return to ODI cricket, will join the Indian team for their first warm-up game against England on September 30.
Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya are the captain and vice captain, respectively, of the Indian World Cup team. Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, K.L. Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav are additional members of the squad.
