A metropolitan magistrate court in Mumbai asked the police on Wednesday to investigate social media influencer Sapna Gill's allegations of molestation against cricketer Prithvi Shaw at an Andheri pub in 2023. Following her complaint, Additional Metropolitan Magistrate SC Tayde ordered the police to look into the claim and provide a report by June 19.
Prithvi Shaw looked in excellent form as he hit 43 for the Delhi Capitals in their IPL 2024 encounter against the Chennai Super Kings on Sunday. Despite not being selected for the first two games of this year's competition, the DC opener proved crucial to his team's first victory. It was an important occasion for the youngster, who had received a lot of criticism for his performance last year.
Details of the case
Gill had filed an FIR against Shaw and his friend Ashish Yadav under sections 354 (Assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (Word, gesture, or act intended to insult a woman's modesty), and 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code in February last year.
Gill had gone to the Andheri Airport police station to register a molestation allegation against the cricket player and his companion before filing a court petition. After the police ignored her complaint, she moved to the magistrate court.
The police report also stated that they had recorded the statement of a CISF official, who confirmed that no such incident had occurred as described by Gill. According to the official, he witnessed a woman with a baseball bat in her hand. When they noticed the cops were drawing near, her male friend grabbed the bat from her and flung it to the side. According to the report, none of the males at the scene assaulted the woman, citing the CISF official's remark.
The claims made by the police against Prithvi Shaw and others are untrue or unsubstantiated, according to the inquiry carried out in response to Gill's complaint. Gill was arrested in February 2023, along with others, in connection with an alleged attack on Shaw at a suburban hotel after an altercation over selfies.
