Group C of the FIFA World Cup came to an end yesterday as Argentina faced Poland in a must-win game to Qualify. Poland somehow had to manage not to let many goals slip away and hope that Mexico would win against Saudi Arabia but not by a huge Goal difference.
Argentina came out all Guns blazing at Stadium 974 in the second half with a Goal in the 46th minute.
for Mac Allister and a 2nd Goal was scored by Manchester City player Julian Alvarez to seal the deal. Argentina Captain Lionel Messi also gave excellent performances but was constantly denied by the Polish Goal- Keeper Szczęsny who saved a Penalty to make sure that Poland's qualification chances were not hurt any further. The Polish goalkeeper despite Poland losing 2-0 ended up getting a 4.5-star rating which was the highest for that game.
Meanwhile on the other side of things at the Lusail Stadium Saudi Arabia faced Mexico and it seemed that things were very comfortable in the matter of qualification for Mexico as they were leading 2-0 against Saudi Arabia. Had Mexico ended the game 2-0 they would have advanced ahead on the basis of more goals scored overall, However, Saudi Arabia did a big favour for Robert Lewandowski s men as they scored a goal in the 95th minute (5th minute of injury time) dropping Mexico's goal difference and allowing Poland to advance on Goal difference basis.
Meanwhile, there was another set of Drama in Group D.
Australia beat Denmark 1-0 thanks to a Goal scored by Leckie in the 60th minute to make them Advance to the Round of 16 for the very first time. Australia who were not even the favourites to get out of the group ended 2nd in their group behind last year's winners France only on the basis of Goal Difference.
France lost to Tunisia as well however because Australia won their game they went up on points helping them secure their position in the Round of 16.
The French team which had already qualified for the Round of 16 faced a 1-0 loss to Tunisia thanks to a Goal from Khazri in the 58th minute.
Group C and Group D come to an end, The winners of Group C Argentina will face the runners-up of Group D Australia on the 4th of December on Sunday. These 2 teams were placed in the same group last World cup back in 2018 and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Ground D winners France will be facing Poland on the 4th of December on Sunday
