Afghanistan fast-bowler Naveen-ul-Haq declared his retirement from ODI cricket after Afghanistan's exit from the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 with a five-wicket defeat to South Africa at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday, November 11th.
Making his debut in 2016, Naveen secured 22 wickets in 15 ODI appearances for Afghanistan. Confirming his retirement via Instagram, the right-arm pacer fulfilled his earlier announcement to step away from ODIs aiming to extend his cricketing career.
Following the match against South Africa, Naveen expressed gratitude on social media, thanking well-wishers and acknowledging the honour of wearing the Afghan jersey throughout his career.
Having played in various global leagues like IPL and BBL, Naveen participated in 27 T20 matches, claiming 34 wickets. Post-retirement from the 50-over format, he commits to representing Afghanistan in T20s while engaging in franchise cricket worldwide.The decision, though challenging, was made to prolong his playing career.
In his final ODI against South Africa in the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023, Naveen remained wicketless, giving 52 runs in 6.3 overs, and South Africa secured a 5-wicket win.
Despite the loss to South Africa, Afghanistan exited the World Cup proudly, securing victories against prominent teams like England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands. Their commendable campaign positioned them sixth in the World Cup 2023 points table and secured a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Throughout the tournament, Naveen played a crucial role, consistently delivering pivotal breakthroughs for the Afghan squad.
