Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland have made the cut for the Best FIFA Men’s Player Award, while Aitana Bonmati from Spain, the Golden Ball winner at the World Cup, is among the contenders for the Best Women’s Player.
Interestingly, Cristiano Ronaldo, who was not in the running for the Ballon d’Or, is also absent from this list.
In the men's category, six of the twelve nominees hail from Manchester City's triumphant 2022-23 squad, with Pep Guardiola, their manager, in the running for Best Men’s Coach.
Spain's World Cup victory has earned them four spots among the 16 nominees for the women’s award. Meanwhile, England, the World Cup runners-up, have four players nominated, and Sarina Wiegman is a candidate for the women’s coaching award. Australia also boasts three players on the list.
The reigning champions, World Cup victors Lionel Messi and Spain’s Alexia Putellas, are hoping to retain their top player titles.
The selection process involved a panel of football experts, which featured retired legends like Mia Hamm and Didier Drogba.
