Medvedev and Tsitsipas advance to the second rounds of Australian Open 2024

Third seeded Daniil Medvedev advanced to the second round of the Australian Open on Monday morning as his opponent Terence Atmane retired in the middle of the match due to cramps.

 

Medvedev lost the first set at Margaret Court Arena but then went on to win the game 5-7, 6-2, 6-4, 1-0. Before the game could get to six sets Medvedev’s opponent retired and complained of cramps. Terence Atmane in the third set was in a good position to fight back but suddenly faced severe cramps in his thighs. Terence Atmane got a time penalty and also a violation for smashing his racquet in frustration. Despite the pain he was going through he broke Medvedev’s service.

Medvedev in the post-match interview said, “Tough match, he played pretty well, “I played badly at the start of the first set. When I started feeling better physically, he started cramping.”

 

No.7 seed of Greece, Stefanos Tsitsipas came back after he lost the first set but then later, when to win the match against Zizou Bergs, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3. Stefanos Tsitsipas was first said to play against the Italian, Metteo Berettini but he dropped out last week due to a foot injury.

Renowned players, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray exited the first round of the Grand Slam after being defeated by their opponents.

Wawrinka lost 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 to France’s Adrian Mannarino.

Murray lost to Argentinian, Etcheverry 6-4,6-2,6-2.
