Argentina faced Croatia in the semi finals of the FIFA World Cup on December 13th. Argentina qualified for the semifinals after beating the Netherlands, while Croatia qualified by winning the penalty shootout against Brazil.
Argentina and Croatia went head-to-head in the semi-finals at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar. The match was built up as a last chance for two legends of their individual countries: Luka Modric from Croatia and Lionel Messi from Argentina. The game seemed one-sided from the start. Argentina got a penalty in the 32nd minute after the Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovi seemed to have tripped Julian Alvarez in the penalty area as an attempt to stop him from scoring. The goalkeeper was also given a yellow card for his actions. The penalty kick was converted by none other than Argentina captain Lionel Messi in the 34th minute. Later on in the 39th minute, Julian Alvarez showed that he was much more than just shooting as he dribbled past half of the Croatian team to score a magical goal to put Argentina in a 2-0 lead. Argentina went into halftime leading by two goals.
The game seemed to slow down after halftime, however, it was Julian Alvarez again who scored to send Argentina into the Final of the World Cup with a beautiful assist from Lionel Messi. With the full-time whistle going up, Argentina reaches their 6th World Cup final, this time hoping to win the planet's ultimate prize to cement the legacy of one of their greatest players, Lionel Messi. Messi also scored in the Semi-Finals, now putting him on a par with the French wonderkid Kylian Mbappe with 5 goals each.
Argentina will play the winner of the France-Morocco game, which will take place at 12:30 a.m. (IST) on the 15th of December 2022.
