Jannik Sinner advances to the second round of Australian Open 

Jannik Sinner got off to a flying start after defeating unseeded Van De Zandschulp 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the Australian Open on Sunday morning.

 

Sinner ended the 2023 year on a great note as he reached the ATP Finals and guided Italy to a win in the Davis Cup final. Sinner grabbed the opportunity of a break in the opening game and then went on to take the first set later on as the game progressed. In the second set the unseeded Van De Zandschulp gave a tough fight to the Italian before the Italian bounced back and took a 6-5 lead.

Sinner in the third set had four break points and won that easily and booked himself a spot in the second round of the Australian Open. He will next be seen playing against either Jesper De Jong or Pedro Cachin. We also witnessed the first five-setter match in the first round of the Australian Open which was won by the 22 seed Argentinian, Francisco Cerundolo who knocked out the Aussie Dane Sweeny, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2.

Matteo Berrettini who was up against Stefanos Tsitsipas has withdrawn from the tournament due to a foot injury. Tsitsipas will now play with Zizou Bergs on Monday.
