Australia defeated the Netherlands by a commanding 309 runs on Wednesday in New Delhi thanks to a century in 40 balls by Glenn Maxwell, the fastest player in World Cup history.
Maxwell's performance surpassed Aiden Markram of South Africa, who earlier in the competition at the same location smashed a century off 49 balls against Sri Lanka.
The Australian all-rounder reached his fifty in 27 balls and then, after growing fond of Bas de Leede, whom he smashed for two boundaries and three sixes in his last over, reached his century in just 13 balls.
Through Maxwell's phenomenal batting, Australia amassed a massive 399 for 8 against the Netherlands. He spent 44 balls at the crease and finished his innings with a score of 106. This century is the fourth fastest in ODI cricket history in addition to being the fastest in World Cup history.
Maxwell was lauded by Sanjay Manjrekar, who remarked that no one could hit as brilliantly as he did that night
"It's just about getting a read on the bowler," Maxwell stated in a conversation with broadcasters. My hands need to be quicker for those who bowl quickly. While some might aim for six, my usual goal is to get it just over the infield. Netherlands preserved a few specific boundaries. Although they were exceptional on the field, the score could have been higher. It appears that the ball travels here.
Due to Warner and Maxwell's destruction, Bas de Leede, a fast-bowling all-round player from the Netherlands, currently holds the record for most bowls.
Australia will now like their chances of making it to the semi-finals after their upcoming matches against Bangladesh, Afghanistan, England, and New Zealand.
