France continued their dominant run in the European Championship qualifying campaign with a 2-0 victory over Ireland. The win extends France's perfect start to five matches and puts them in a strong position to secure a spot at the continental tournament in Germany next summer.
With 15 points, they currently top Group B with a nine-point lead over the Netherlands and Greece. Aurelien Tchouameni and Marcus Thuram were the goal scorers for France in the match played at Paris Saint-Germain's stadium. Kylian Mbappe provided the assist for Tchouameni's opener, while Ousmane Dembele was a constant threat down the right flank.
Ireland's Chiedozie Ogbene started brightly but faded as France took control after Tchouameni's goal in the 19th minute. France had a chance to extend their lead before halftime when Mbappe thought he had scored, but a VAR check confirmed his teammate was in an offside position in the buildup. However, Thuram made it 2-0 early in the second half from the rebound after Mbappe's shot was blocked. France goalkeeper Mike Maignan ensured another clean sheet with a reflex save to deny Ogbene's header.
The team has been rock solid defensively throughout the qualifying campaign, not conceding a single goal. Overall, France's performance against Ireland further solidified their position as one of the favourites in the European Championship. With their perfect start and strong defensive record, they are well on their way to securing a place in the tournament next summer.
