FIFA Suspends Spain's football President Luis Rubiales over kiss, 11 coaches resign

Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)'s disciplinary committee has temporarily suspended Spanish Soccer Federation (RFEF) chief Luis Rubiales for 90 days, it said on Saturday, after he grabbed player Jenni Hermoso's head and kissed her on the lips after Spain's triumph at the Women’s World Cup.

“The chairman of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee… has decided today to provisionally suspend Mr Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities at national and international level,” FIFA said in a statement.

Rubiales was in any case supposed to tender his resignation on Friday however he said he wouldn't step down. The RFEF threatened legal action to defend him after Hermoso said she didn't consent to the kiss he gave her.

Rubiales has been suspended from “all football-related activities at national and international level” as part of this suspension. The pressure grew after nearly all the coaching staff (seemingly 11 coaches) for Spain’s women’s team resigned, citing the “unacceptable attitude” of Luis Rubiales

The onus now is on Rubiales who has vowed to prove his innocence after his provisional suspension.

Luis Rubiales is a Spanish football administrator and former professional footballer. He was elected to this position in May 2018, succeeding Juan Luis Larrea. Rubiales had a notable career as a footballer, playing as a defender. He played for clubs like Levante, Alicante, and Xerez, as well as representing the Spanish national team at various youth levels.
