T20 World Cup 2024: Defending Champions England Beats West Indies by 8 Wickets

The Defending champions have done it again!! After struggling to qualify in Super 8 on the grounds of the United States, England has made a solid comeback by defeating West Indies by 8 wickets!! What a T20 World Cup Super 8 opener it was!

West Indies came undefeated in Darren Sammy National Stadium, St Lucia, but England had another plan, breaking the West Indies’ winning streak!

Match Overview: 

England captain Jos Buttler opted to bowl first after winning the toss. West Indies posted 180/4 in their 20 overs. England chased the target in just 17 overs!

West Indies Managed to give England a decent total! 

Openers Brandon King and Johnson Charles provided a solid start, but King's promising innings was cut short at 23 runs off 13 balls due to an injury. Charles scored 38 off 34 balls before falling to Moeen Ali in the 12th over.

Nicholas Pooran (36 off 32 balls) and Rovman Powell (36 off 19 balls) took further the West Indies’ score. Powell’s explosive hitting in Liam Livingstone over was eye-catching! West Indies made 20 runs in that single over. 

What went wrong? Quick fall of 3 wickets in later stages in just 12 deliveries made West Indies slow. The wickets of Pooran and Andre Russell, who managed just one run off two balls. Sherfane Rutherford's 28 off 15 balls (not out) , along with Romario Shepherd’s five not out, took the West Indies to a competitive total of 180.

England’s Batting Line was on fire! 

In the second innings, A masterclass from Phil Salt, who remained not out on 87 runs off 47 balls, took England to chase down a target of 181 with 15 deliveries left very comfortably. 

Openers Phil Salt and Jos Buttler laid a solid foundation with a 97-run partnership. Buttler, however, fell to Roston Chase in the eighth over for 25 off 22 balls. Moeen Ali came at number three, but could only add 13 runs before falling to Andre Russell in the 11th over, leaving England at 91/2.

The target was comfortably chased in the 17.3 overs with scoring 181/2.

Salt’s 87 not out, with 13 fours and three sixes, showcased his ability to handle pressure and accelerate when needed. Bairstow in support made quickfire 48 runa with seven boundaries and a six. England Skipper Jos Buttler made 25 off 22 balls. Coming to the bowling line, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone took 1 wicket each.

With no half century for any Batsman,  Johnson Charles made 38 runs off 34 balls, Nicholas Pooran scored 36 off 32 balls, Rovman Powell with an impressive run rate, made 36 runs off just 19 balls.
