During the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL), Mumbai Indians (MI) completely dominated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Chennai Eliminator to secure their spot in Qualifier 2, and remarkably, their success was driven by a bowler who was almost unknown prior to this. He is Akash Madhwal, a 29-year-old who gave up his regular job as an engineer to pursue cricket professionally
After Akash Madhwal's outstanding performance of 5/5 in 3.3 overs against LSG, he claimed that engineers have the propensity to pick things up quickly.
On the strength of Cameron Green's 41 and cameos from Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera, Mumbai Indians (MI) set a target of 183. Prerak Mankad was the LSG's first wicket, and Madhwal took him, giving the chase a bad start.
Before Marcus Stoinis helped stabilise the innings, Kyle Mayers was the next player to lose his position. LSG fell apart after losing Krunal, and Madhwal went through the entire batting order.
Ayush Badoni and Nicholas Pooran were caught by the Uttarakhand pacer in back-to-back deliveries in the same over.
Madhwal finished with record-breaking stats as he became the first bowler to pull up a five-wicket haul in the knockout stage of a franchise-based T20 event after taking the wickets of Ravi Bishnoi and Mohsin Khan to put the cherry on top for MI.
Madhwal declared he was proud of his performance and vowed to improve in the upcoming matches. The 29-year-old responded that Jasprit Bumrah has his spot and that he was only doing it to fulfill his part when asked if he has filled Jasprit Bumrah's shoes for MI.
According to Madhwal, Pooran's wicket was the best for him during the stint.
