BCCI to Hire New Selection Committee

On the 18th of November, BCCI announced that it is inviting members for the men's national selectors position.

Previously the selection committee was run by a former fast bowler, Chetan Sharma and included Harvinder Singh, Sunil Joshi and Debasish Mohanty. According to statements made by them they were not informed of this decision by the BCCI. The sacked selection committee has had one of the shortest runs as the men's selection committee in quite a while.

The deadline for the application of new hiring is 28th November. The requirements of the future men's selection committee are that anyone who applies must have played at least seven Tests or 30 first-class matches, or 10 ODI and 20 first-class matches. they should have retired from the game at least five years ago, and they cannot have already served for five years as a member of any of the BCCI's cricket committees.

According to this, Chetan and his team can apply again. The sacking of the selection committee was not surprisingly met with cheers from cricket fans, with many memes emerging related to the sacking.

The decision seems to have been pre-decided after India's loss in the 2021 T20 world cup, elimination in the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 world cup and losing the world test championship final. The final nail in the coffin for the selection committee was announced 4 different squads at once.

According to the BCCI's statement, the new selection committee will have certain responsibilities.

  • Select the best possible team in a fair and transparent manner.
  • Plan and prepare a strong bench strength for the senior men's national team.
  • Attend team meetings as and when required.
  • Travel to watch domestic and international matches.
  • Prepare and provide evaluation reports of the respective team performances to the apex council of BCCI on a quarterly basis.
  • Address the media on team selection as and when instructed by BCCI.
  • Appoint a captain for the team in each format.
  • Adhere to the rules and regulations of BCCI.

According to this, one can assume that the BCCI is looking for split captainship in the future. Let us hope that this new change will bring India closer to victories and better plays than the ones we experienced in the T20 World Cup.
