World no.3 Danill Medvedev cruised into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open 2024 after defeating Portugal’s Nuno Borges. The Portuguese gave the Russian a great fight at the Rod Laver Arena but the Russian emerged victorious as he sealed his spot in the quarter-finals.
He beat Nuno Borges 6-3, 7-6, (7/4), 5-7, 6-1.
Danill Medvedev will now be facing Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals.
Nuno Borges made a total of 66 errors but Danill Medvedev made only 34 which was one of the key differences between these two opponents. Looking back at the match, Danill Medvedev’s strong baseline power and his ability to control long rallies played a crucial role in his victory.
Danill Medvedev acknowledged Nuno Borges efforts on the court and said in his post-match presentation that, “Before this match, I was feeling 100 percent, but he made run in the third set, and that’s why I missed a little bit too much. I was pretty dead, to be honest. In the fourth set, I managed to raise my energy levels”
Danill Medvedev who was a finalist in the 2021 and 2022 Australian Opens lost to Djokovic and Nadal in those two respective years. Now, his main goal this year is to climb a step further and win the Grand Slam title.
