Australian Open 2024 - Key players to look out for

The much-awaited tennis season is back with Australian Open starting on the 14th of January. The Australian Open on Thursday announced the women’s draw in Melbourne. The tennis fans are in for an incredible tennis spectacle starting from Sunday the 14th of January.

 

We are expected to see new and familiar faces this tournament. World number 1, Iga Swiatek is expected to play against former champion Sofia Kenin. Previous Australian Open champions Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber are all set to make their comebacks after retuning from maternity leaves. Kerber was last seen in 2022 Wimbledon and is all set to be seen in her first grand slam since 2022. Between Iga and Kenin, whoever wins that game moves further ahead and is expected to play against either Kerber or Collins in the second round.

Elina Rybakina, the former champion of Wimbledon in 2022 and the runners up for last year’s Australian Open is set to face World Number 1 Karolina Pliskova in the first round. Australian Open 2023 winner, Aryana Sabalenka who is the current No. 2 seed will take on a qualifier in the opening round. Along with her, Ons Jabuer will also take on a qualifier in the opening round.

However, the men’s draw will have spotlight all over Djokovic and Alcaraz. Djokovic is the 24 time Grand Slam champion and has won the Australian Open title 10 times.

Djokovic will take on a qualifier in the opening round and may face challenges from the third round as Andy Murray and Gael Monfils the unseeded players are in his section.

 

Alcaraz is set to begin his campaign against Richard Gasquet in the first round. He could also play a possible quarter-final against Alexander Zverev.  The two-time Australian Open finalist, Medvedev will also take on a qualifier in the opening round and could face Holger Rune in the quarter-final.

Rafael Nadal the 22-time men’s Grand Slam champion was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a hip injury.

Australian Open is set to start on 14th of January and the finals of the men’s round will take place on 28th January.
