India's Sumit Nagal beat France's Geoffrey Blancaneaux in the Australian Open 2024 qualifiers, moving him closer to making it to the main draw of the next Grand Slam event. Topping Blancaneaux 6-3, 7-5, Nagal won a match that went almost two hours. Australia's Edward Winter will be his next opponent.
Nagal started strong in the first set and ended up 4-1 ahead. Although Blancaneaux made a late comeback, Nagal easily won the set. More evenly matched players played in the second set, which ended in a 5-5 tie. However, Nagal won the match by getting a 7-5 lead, which avoided a decider and ended it in his favour.
The first Indian player to beat Roger Federer in a major competition was Nagal. Winter is his next trial opponent. Nagal, 122nd in the world, lost in the opening round of the Australian Open. Unlike before, he wants to reach the main draw and improve. He reached the 2020 US Open second round, his greatest Grand Slam result. He aspires to improve at Melbourne's 2024 Australian Open.
