Asian Games 2023: India wins Silver and Bronze in Women's Steeplechase 3000m

Indian athletes made their mark in the women's 3000m steeplechase event at the Asian Games 2023. Parul Chaudhary, the reigning Asian Championships Gold medalist, secured the silver medal, while world champion Yavi Winfried from Bahrain made history by breaking the Games record on Monday, October 2.

Chaudhary, who had a fantastic season in 2023, began her journey with a bronze medal at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix in May, where she clocked a new personal best of 9:29.51. Her journey continued with a record-breaking performance at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, in August, where she established a new Indian national record in the women's 3000m steeplechase, surpassing the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifying standards.

At the Asian Games in Hangzhou, Chaudhary clocked an impressive time of 9:27.63s, securing the silver medal. However, it was Yavi Winfried who stole the spotlight by smashing Jebet Ruth's Games record from 2014 with an astonishing time of 9:18.26s, earning her the gold medal. This remarkable achievement solidified Yavi's status as the world champion in the event.

Contributing to India's success in the steeplechase event, Prithi also displayed remarkable prowess, clinching the bronze medal with a personal best time of 9:43.32s.

Indian athletes have unquestionably made their presence felt at the Asian Games 2023, and their performances in the women's 3000m steeplechase underline their dedication and skill on the international stage, with medals in hand and records broken.
