Alexander Zverev's straight-sets victory over defending Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz at the 2024 Australian Open stunned the defending champion. Alicaraz, an additional favourite to prevail, was defeated by Zverev 6-1, 6-3, 7-5. Previous World No. 1 Alcaraz was the incumbent. This means that in the semifinals, the Germans will face Daniil Medvedev; the victor may advance to the championship match on Sunday.
Zverev played a great first set, dropping only one game to win the match. He continued to play brilliantly and took a commanding lead in the second set after breaking Alcaraz twice. Alcaraz recovered well to break Zverev in the third set. As a result, Alcaraz prevailed in a tiebreak. It was Alcaraz who lost, as Zverev broke early in the fourth set and held serve to win. Since Djokovic defeated Medvedev in the Australian Open final in 2021, there's a chance they'll play each other again. Medvedev responded by defeating Djokovic in the US Open final in 2021.
Unfortunately for Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev beat him in straight sets, ending his chances of winning the Australian Open. Novak Djokovic will play Zverev in the semifinals, and Medvedev will play Jannik Sinner. Medvedev and Djokovic played each other in the finals of both the Australian Open and the US Open in 2021, so this championship match is sure to be exciting.
