Shubman Gill got the 100th IPL century in Ahmedabad, and his opening partner Sai Sudharsan followed suit shortly after. Here are all of the fascinating facts regarding 100 IPL centuries:
Hundreds by season
14 hundred recorded in the present IPL are the most in a single edition of the competition, breaking the previous record of 12 in 2023. The last quarter of a century in IPL required only two seasons, whereas each of the three prior blocks took approximately 4-to 5 years on average. Brendon McCullum struck the first IPL century on the opening night, Shane Watson got the 25th in 2013, Rishabh Pant scored the 50th in 2018, and Jos Buttler hit the 75th in 2022.
Only two centuries were scored in the second edition of the 2009 competition, which was the lowest in a season. In 2008 and again in 2015, there were two seasons in which all of the hundreds were scored by hitters from other countries.
Hundreds for/against a team
RCB has amassed the most hundreds of any team in the IPL with 19, but they have also been the targets of the most, with MI and KKR scoring 13 hundreds each against them. KKR has the poorest net, with three hundred to 13 against them. Gujarat Lions is another team with a six deficit, having conceded six centuries, four of which came in 2016, while none of their batters scored a three-figure score in the two seasons they played.
PBKS had 13 different players providing 15 hundreds (Hashim Amla and KL Rahul have two apiece), whereas no other team has had more than eight players score for them.
Every one of the 15 IPL teams has had at least one century scored against them, and three of the teams—Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Pune Warriors India, and Gujarat Lions—have not had a century struck against them.
SRH took 71 matches over five seasons to get their first three-figure score, the longest delay of any team, whilst KKR and CSK both had a century in their debut game.
The most hundreds ever scored at one location is sixteen at Wankhede Stadium, followed by fourteen at Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad has seen six three-figure knocks in just 34 games or one per 5.7 games - the best rate for a venue.
Centurians across borders
53 players have achieved hundreds in the IPL, with 27 overseas batters contributing 52 and 26 domestic batters accounting for the remaining 49. Australia leads all other foreign countries in batting, with ten different hitters contributing 17 hundred apiece. With 15 three-figure scores, England's hitters also finished second, after South Africa (9), the West Indies (8), Sri Lanka (2), and New Zealand (2). The last Sri Lankan to make an IPL century was Mahela Jayawardene in the 2010 edition; Brendon McCullum is the only New Zealander to do it in 2008 and 2015.
Most number of centuries
Virat Kohli has the most hundreds in the league as an individual batter, while Jos Buttler has seven as an overseas batsman. Kohli and Buttler share the record for the most individual centuries in a season, with four apiece in 2016 and 2022. The only batsman to score three hundreds in a loss is Virat Kohli. Hashim Amla and Ruturaj Gaikwad both scored hundreds in losses, with the former doing so twice in a single season.
Seven uncapped players have scored hundreds in the IPL, six of them are Indian hitters, with Shaun Marsh becoming the only foreigner to do so in 2008. In 2009, Manish Pandey became the first Indian batter to score a century in the Indian Premier League, regardless of whether he had a cap or not. Paul Valthaty and 23-year-old Prabhsimran Singh are the only two Indian uncapped players who have not gone on to represent their country in international matches.
Highest Individual Total in IPL
Chris Gayle's 2013 century against PWI in Bengaluru, which he scored in 30 balls, is the fastest of the 101 IPL centuries. The highest individual IPL score is still Gayle's undefeated 175 against PWI, while the best by an Indian batsman is KL Rahul's 132* for Punjab Kings against RCB in Dubai in 2020. Opening hitters have scored 76 of the IPL's 101 hundreds. Sanju Samson and AB de Villiers each scored three of the 25 remaining runs, all of which came from the middle order.
There have been eight instances of two batters getting hundreds in the same IPL match, with six of those occurring in the last two years. Of the eight, three featured hitters who scored hundreds for the same team: Gill and Sudarshan for the Gujarat Titans against CSK in 2024; AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli for the RCB against the Gujarat Lions in 2016; David Warner and Jonny Bairstow for the SRH against the RCB in 2019.
