All India Trinamool Congress suspended the party's nautorious Sandeshkhali functionary, Sheikh Shahjahan, the main accused of a case where several women sexually assaulted and grazed on Thursday. The party's leader, Derek O'Brien, said in a press briefing that Shahjahan had been suspended from the party for six years. This decision was made after his arrest. Shahjahan Sheikh will no longer hold any party posts.
West Bengal's Basirhat court remanded Shahjahan Sheikh, alias Sk Shahjahan, to 10 days in police custody on Thursday.
The court session lasted for just a few minutes, Vygr News learned. Shahjahan Sheikh was immediately taken to Bhabani Bhawan, the state CID headquarters, from the court. Aamir Ali Gazi, a close aide of Shahjahan, was also arrested in Jharkhand.
"The arrest of the prime accused in the Sandeshkhali incident is an eye opener for everyone, " Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, who gave a 72-hour deadline for the police to arrest Shahjahan, remarked on Thursday.
"There will be light at the end of the tunnel, which is democracy. The new dawn of lawfulness will come back to Bengal," he told reporters here.
After evading authorities for over 55 days, Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested on Thursday by the Nazat Police station in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. He was apprehended at a residence in the Bamanpukur area, located under the Minakhan police station's jurisdiction, on the outskirts of the Sundarbans.
Shahjahan is charged with an assault case against Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers during a raid at his residence on January 5th in connection with a ration scam case. The influential Trinamul leader is accused of violating several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 147, 148, 149, 307, 333, and 392. The protests began earlier in the area as women in the region accused Sheikh and his associates of land grabbing and sexual assault.
The police were able to track Shahjahan's location by tracing his cellphone signal. This arrest was made after the Calcutta High Court pulled up the West Bengal police for the delay in apprehending Shahjahan. The police received about 100 complaints against Shahjahan Sheikh, including gang rape.
