After the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government and the INDIA group of opposition parties were unable to reach an agreement, the Bharatiya Janata Party's Om Birla and Congressman Kodikunnil Suresh engaged in an unusual contest for the Speaker position on Wednesday in the 18th Lok Sabha. On Wednesday, the resolution to elect Mr. Birla as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha was moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant moved the motion to name Mr. Suresh as Speaker.
