India hands over G20 presidency to Brazil, priorities listed

India officially transferred the G20 presidency to Brazil on Sunday at the closing ceremony of the annual summit of the group, which was held in New Delhi over the weekend. In a ceremonial gesture, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the gavel of the G20 presidency to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, completing the transition of power. India held the presidency of the G20 from December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023. It took over from Indonesia and passed it on to Brazil.

During the two-day summit, the bloc adopted a consensus declaration that made commitments on several issues, related to food and energy security, climate change, and the vulnerabilities associated with global debt. At the closing ceremony, Modi symbolically passed the gavel to Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and wished him well in his presidency.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also identified social inclusion, the fight against hunger, energy transition, and sustainable development as priorities for the G20. Lula da Silva said that the UN Security Council needs to add new permanent and non-permanent members from developing countries in order to regain its political strength. He also called for greater representation of emerging countries at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
